I recently purchased a GF4 MX440 card for my Myth system.
During installation should I be selecting XvMC? And what exactly does it get me? I have an install running right now, and it seems good when I watch it on the monitor. How would XvMC change things?
Off to try and get the TV out sorted... the flat panel monitor I'm uusing poses some refresh issues...

The reason you may want to use XvMC is offloading the CPU. I run my setup on a Celeron 700. If I want a decent picture XvMC is really needed, otherwise my CPU can't catch up.
On the other hand if you want to use any filters, you have to disable XvMC or they will be ignored.
I suppose if you're happy with your current setup, stick with it. You can always try of course. |

another thing to remember xvmc only works on mpeg2 meaning if you don't have a pvr or hdtv card it doesn't get you anything.
On another note I've heard a couple of people now claim that xvmc means you can't use any filters. Is this a new development or what? I used to use xvmc back in the original R4 days and my deinterlace filters worked just fine with it. |

I thought xvmc was passed as an option to mplayer renderer and would spare the CPU for YUV/RGB color conversions in all cases, not only when mplayer is fed with an MPEG2 stream...
Am I completely wrong ?

I believe you are thinking of xv not xvmc they are different xv is X video acceleration XvMC X video motion compensation and only works on mpeg2. Xv however does work on any video. Xv is available on almost any card that has it's own drivers, (not using vesa) XvMC is only available on nvidia (yes I've heard rumor that epia cle266 unigraphics has it too, but haven't seen it.)

well you have to install with xvmc support or it will not be available then you go to the screen where you turn on pvr350 tvout has a checkmark on the bottom for xvmc.

OK, thanks for making this clear ! And that probably explains why install-i686-x would not work on my config.

Actually, there's a bug there. You can't instal XvMC only, the script install-i686-x references files that don't exist. You have to install the one that includes LIRC, install-i686-lx. It appears that it doesn't hurt anything if you ignore the LIRC part after you install it.
